High Court Denies Bail Again in Guinea Grass Murder Case

It was a tough day in court for veteran attorney Simeon Sampson. At ninety-one years old, the Senior Counsel went before the High Court to seek bail for his client, but once again, the answer was no. This marks the third time bail has been denied for Nelson De Jesus Segovia, the man accused of murdering his neighbor in Guinea Grass back in April 2022. Segovia was on the run for nearly two years before police caught up with him in Belmopan in November 2023. Today’s hearing lasted just seven minutes. Justice Candace Nanton ruled that not enough was presented to justify granting bail, especially given the seriousness of the charge, murder, a capital offense. The DPP’s office didn’t object to bail outright but raised concerns about conditions, including whether Segovia would relocate since he lived across from the victim’s family. The judge also questioned why it took so long to arrest him after the shooting. For now, Segovia remains behind bars, having spent just over two years on remand. Attorney Sampson says he’ll advise his client to wait another two years before trying again. The case stems from a deadly dispute in Guinea Grass where thirty-year-old Jose Miguel Cedillos was shot multiple times in his yard. Segovia was later identified as the suspect and charged with murder. His trial date remains uncertain.
