High Flying Dunks and Magical Goals

Good evening, Belizean ballers and non-ballers at home and abroad! I’m Shane Williams with this week’s athletic highlights from the Jewel. This is Sports Monday.

Lets start things off at the Belize Elementary School Auditorium for the Central Secondary School Basketball Championships between the undefeated Edward P. Yorke and Maude Wiliams High School. Orozco blitz this drive early in the second quarter, quickly turning defense into offense with a fast-break layup to go up eleven to five! E.P. Yorke’s point forward Alvarez tries to mount a comeback hear on this drive in traffic, and one! Early in the fourth, E.P York cuts the deficit to six with this steal and outlet for an easy layup. But with less than a minute to go in the final quarter this outlet from MVP Orozco to his teammate seals the championship for Maud Williams.

In game two of the girls championship, Sadie Vernon has to overcome a four point differential after losing twenty to sixteen in game one to the Wesley College girls. Here we see Wesley’s Clayian Swazo turns this outlet into a quick three on three fastbreak and finishes with a smooth layup for 2. The best defensive player of the tournament, Summer Francis, set the tone for Wesley, showing here that she governs over a no layup zone! Four seconds left in the game, Sadie Vernon inbounds the ball up three and needing one point to tie but couldn’t get a shot up. They get the win and ties the series at one game each but Wesley College wins due to points differential from game one.

Congratulations to Maud Williams boys and Wesley College girls. They now represent the central region at nationals this weekend.

In the Belize Regional U-Thirteen Boys tournament at Berger Field, the Leaders of Tomorrow takes on the KP Strikers. In the opening minute, the Leaders of Tomorrow’s Kyrie Pook measures and blasts this one in the right corner for goal. Less than a minute later Jason Godoy takes this spot kick for the KP Strikers from midfield. Boom pass the outstretched arms of the keeper. One goal a piece. Just five minutes into the game, Randy Castillo puts the leaders up two to 1. Immediately after, like Deja vu all over again, Jason Godoy from midfield!!! Tied game. Tyron Fitzgibbon gets this pass in the sixth minute and knows exactly what to do with it. Go ahead goal. Leaders of Tomorrow wins four to two. In the big match between Reality Youths and City Royals, This goal in the twenty-ninth minute by Conor Baizar was not enough to match two goals by Trayvon Brown to give the Reality Youths a two-one victory.

In the William Dawso Sprite Cup this weekend at Bird’s Isle, Don one made easy work of the G Assassins with a sixteen point win behind Holdane Swazo’s twenty points.  Jahren Rivers scored twenty-three points for Survivor Ballers to shoot down the Rising Stars fifty-seven to forty-one. I.G. Ballers let of a thirty-one point beat down of Team Nash with an impressive forty-five-points coming from Devin Moody himself. In game four on Saturday, Western Paradise dropped Tora Bora fifty-six to forty-two.  Class was on top once again, defeating Boulevard Ballers forty-seven to thirty-four. In the closest match of the weekend, Avengers outlasted Trench Town forty-six to forty-five.

Well folks, that’s all we have for you this week on Sports Monday. Feel free to send us your videos. Until next time, remember that friendly competition unites and balling is life. So, keep balling Belize!
