Hitting the Road This Easter?
As the Easter weekend approaches, many Belizeans are gearing up to leave the city and head to the cayes, villages, and inland destinations to spend time with family and unwind. But with that annual Easter travel rush comes traffic, delays, and safety concerns.
If you’re planning to hit the road, here’s what you need to know before you go:
1) Plan Ahead to Beat the Rush
Thursday leading into Good Friday are usually the busiest travel days. Long lines can build up at bus terminals, water taxis, and highways leading out of Belize City.
Leaving early in the morning or later in the evening could help you avoid peak traffic.
2) Expect Delays on Major Routes
Popular routes heading west and south tend to see heavy traffic, especially for those travelling to the Cayo District or coastal areas. Roadworks or accidents can slow things down even more, so patience is key.
3) Increased Police Patrols
Authorities say there will be increased patrols and checkpoints during the Easter weekend. You’ve heard it repeatedly, but avoid speeding, DON’T drink and drive, and wear your seatbelts. If you do plan on drinking, find a designated driver.
Motorists are also urged to be patient, adhere to traffic instructions, and avoid overtaking or obstructing riders along the route.
Police further advise to “leave somebody to look after your home, because we don’t want you to come back and find out that your house has been burgled over the weekend.”
And importantly, do not leave minors unattended, especially when large crowds are in the water.
4) If You Have One, Check Your Vehicle Before You Go
Before heading out, make sure your vehicle is road-ready. Check tyres and brakes. Ensure lights are working. Top up on fuel, despite the soaring prices!
A quick check can prevent breakdowns and long delays.
5) Pack Smart for the Weekend
Whether you’re heading to the beach or inland, don’t forget sunscreen, water, snacks, and CASH, as some areas may have limited card services.
With thousands expected to travel across the country, preparation and patience will go a long way this Easter weekend.
