Internal HRCU Report Leak Raises Compliance Concerns

Tonight, Holy Redeemer Credit Union is fighting back against what it calls a serious breach of confidentiality. HRCU has issued an official statement after an internal audit report was leaked to the media and discussed on national television. The report, originally intended for senior management and the board, was shared with Channel 7’s Jules Vasquez, who aired details during his newscast and morning program. HRCU says this disclosure violates the Credit Union Act and its own Code of Conduct, warning that the leak compromises agreements with regulators and external auditors. The credit union assures its members that all concerns raised in the audit have been addressed and that strict compliance measures remain in place. But how did this document get out, and what does it mean for transparency and accountability in Belize’s financial sector? The statement cites Section Thirty-two of the Credit Union Act, does this section prohibit media from reporting on leaked documents, or only restrict HRCU officials? Is legal action being considered against the leak or the broadcaster?

“I think I believe that matter for the HRCU to respond to certainly it is very concerning when anybody’s personal financial information is released. I’m sure your news media manager wouldn’t want his personal financial information released to the public. So I find that very concerning. The laws are very clear that this information is confidential. I do believe that the report that was shared was a preliminary report. But like I said, I think that HRC will give its own response. But I think I, and I hope that when the HRCU gives its response and clears up the matter that is also aired on your news program.”
