Is PUP Losing Ground in Belmopan? 

The P.U.P. ‘s Belmopan campaign is facing an early test of its political strength, with Mayor Pablo Cawich’s endorsement convention drawing only a fraction of the crowd organisers had targeted. Cawich and his sitting council are seeking another term. 

Cawich and his sitting council were endorsed on Friday as the P.U.P.’s team for the upcoming municipal elections. The mayor had told Plus TV ahead of the event that organisers were aiming for approximately 2,000 supporters. 

The turnout reportedly fell well short of that target, with estimates putting the crowd at roughly 300 people.

That figure is particularly notable given the incentives offered to supporters. Organisers advertised free food and soft drinks, two-dollar beers and entertainment by Super Furia following the official ceremony. 

The relatively small turnout comes as the P.U.P. continues to deal with political uncertainty surrounding Oscar Mira and Florencio Marin Jr. amid the Ministry of Defence’s ongoing investigation. 

Cawich and his team have five months until municipal election takes place in 2027.
