Julian Cho Society Leads Climate Funding Revolution
Earlier this week, we shared a major milestone from the Julian Cho Society. The organization is pushing to secure support from the Green Climate Fund for what could become the world’s first-ever Indigenous-led climate project. The proposal goes beyond asking for money, it’s about creating a system that ensures climate funding actually reaches Indigenous communities, the ones who’ve been protecting the land for generations. The focus is land rights, environmental protection, and sustainable development, all rooted in Indigenous leadership.
Christina Coc, Spokesperson, MLA/TAA
“We have been apart of the efforts of indigenous people globally to advocate for amore dedicated fund towards indigenous people in climate action. This is not something new. It is something we have been working on for some time now and the green climate fund has been very receptive to indigenous people advocacy. They are really looking at ways to improve access to these finance. A lot of time studies have shown that the climate finance barely reach the grass roots, people on the ground, already adapting to climate change, proposing to climate action at the forefront. I think the GCF are responding positively to this call. We are very happy. We worked very hard to put together a through concept and to be able to have the support of the state. We are coming to the realization that climate change should be everyone’s concern, especially to those closest to the land and to the forest we want to protect and preserve.”
