Labor Department Pushes Fairer Workplace Resolution

The Belize Labor Department is partnering with the International Labor Organization to improve how workplace disputes are handled and resolved. This week, the Ministry of Immigration, Governance and Labor hosted a series of activities aimed at strengthening Belize’s labor dispute system and improving access to fair labor services. A key activity was a review of the Labor Complaints Tribunal, led by an ILO labor relations expert, to identify ways the system can better serve both workers and employers. Representatives from Belize, the Bahamas and Trinidad and Tobago also exchanged ideas on strengthening labor dispute resolution and reducing workplace conflict. In addition, Labor Department officers, employers and trade union representatives received training in negotiation and conciliation, including role-playing exercises to practice resolving disputes constructively. The Ministry says the initiative is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen labor institutions and promote better cooperation between employers and workers in Belize.
