Land Manager Critical After Maya Ranch Shooting
Alfred Mahler, a land manager, remains hospitalized in critical condition tonight after being shot while reportedly checking on property under his care. Family members say that the attack happened after he went to investigate the presence of squatters on the land, though police are still piecing together exactly what unfolded. The victim underwent emergency surgery and lost a significant amount of blood, leaving relatives scrambling to mobilize donors. A blood drive is now underway as doctors work to stabilize his condition. Meanwhile, police have detained one person as the investigation continues. We spoke with a relative of the victim.

“We only know what the police told us that he went to check on a land that he manage, and there were squatters on the land. And they ambush him in somewhere. The exact particulars we don’t really know because they don’t share everything yet with we. And they still di try do their own investigation. They have hold one person so far who they claim was trying to escape, but they done hold ah. He underwent surgery for a couple hours last night. They had to remove some of his organs because the bullet really did a damage in his stomach. He’s stable but critical. The most important thing right now is he needs blood, a lot, because he lost a lot of blood. So right now we’re doing a blood drive where we’re trying to get people to donate blood. At least we need twenty-two people like today, tomorrow, and the other day. And the doctors are saying once we can try to get this blood and he’s stabilized, they believe that he can pull through. But right now we need a lot of prayer for him because he’s not out of the woods. Even if we have to pay, we’re willing to pay. We need the blood. Doctors stressed that so much on us last night that we need to get blood from wherever we can. If you’re in San Pedro or if you’re in Dangriga, wherever there’s a blood bank, they’re accepting any type of blood. He is O positive, but they are accepting any type because of the urgency that we need the blood.”
