Denise Stewart is grieving the loss of her 22-year-old son, Daniel Tillett, who was shot and killed around 12:30 a.m. on Antelope Street Extension in Belize City. Police found Tillett in a drain with multiple gunshot wounds.

Speaking to reporters, Stewart recounted the night her son was killed. “It was right around the corner… my son went out Friday night. He said he was fixing his house and wanted to complete it for his family,” she said. Daniel had a girlfriend and a baby and was focused on building a home for them.

Stewart said Tillett had gone out Saturday evening after receiving money from his sister in the United States. He bought supplies for his house, including a lock for his door. Later that night, she fell asleep and woke to the sound of gunfire, initially mistaking it for dynamite. “After the gunshots, I heard a female voice screaming. My son ran out, and by the time I got outside, I saw a young man coming into my yard telling me my son was killed,” Stewart said.

Police told reporters today that Tillett “was travelling on a motorcycle…when three male persons, each armed with a firearm, exited a yard…and fired several shots at him.” The three gunmen quickly escaped. The murder was captured by a police security camera.

Stewart said her son had been threatened in the past. “Recently, some guys in the neighbourhood had it in for him… There was word on the street, but nobody would give actual statements,” she explained. She believes the attack may be linked to conflicts among local groups.
