In recent months, the Statistical Institute of Belize has reported rising meat prices, with ground beef, steak, and pork chops increasing by three to ten percent. What’s driving the spike? We put the question to Chief Agriculture Officer Dr. Victoriano Pascual. Here’s his response.

“Of course when it comes to the increase in price we need to understand that cattle production and with the market opened to Mexico, a lot of the farmers are selling their cattle to the Mexican and Guatemalan market. So, because there is a demand over there, there has been a slight increase over in Belize. That is the reason why.”
