Mahler Says Big Port Of Belize Development Soon
Tourism Minister Anthony Mahler is urging residents of Southside Belize City not to sell their land, saying major development plans are imminent that could transform the community’s economy. Today at a land distribution ceremony in Port Loyola, Minister Mahler told recipients that the government’s ambitious plans to modernize the Port of Belize are about to move into a new phase. He said they have begun serious discussions with credible investors. It is a project officials say could require hundreds of millions of dollars in investment and usher in an era of economic growth. Mahler stressed that with construction set to begin soon, holding onto land now could bring long-term rewards for residents.

“The main one being the Port of Belize. There’s clarity on where we want to go. We’re working on the ESIA. We have had good discussions with credible, huge partners to develop the port. And I think that is going to transform Belize City, transform this entire area. Like I said when I gave a few words there, if you look at the people who have wealth, the vast majority of them own huge traps of land and that gives them a base for them to be able to leverage, to go to the banks to get money and to attract other business investments in their land areas. So if we give a thousand, a hundred thousand Belizeans their own house lot, that will make a mark in the development of our nation.”
