A 48-year-old man was killed by his bull yesterday morning at his ranch near the Hummingbird Community in the Stann Creek District.
Enrique Barrera, a naturalised Belizean of Honduran heritage, died after being attacked by his bull, named Jet. His wife, Adelma Barrera, told News 5 that Enrique had lived in Belize since the age of 19 and was a loving husband and father of three.
Adelma added that Enrique had gone to the ranch to feed the animals. She said her father was present but not close by; when he heard a scream, he rushed over to see what had happened.
Adelma stated that Enrique was found on the ground, bleeding profusely.
“He called me, and I found people who would help me go look for him and take him to the hospital,” she said.
Police arrived at the hospital and took statements from the family.
Enrique died on the way to the Southern Regional Hospital due to excessive bleeding, according to Adelma.
She described her husband as a man who was “hard-working, humble, and took care of his family.”
Adelma confirmed that the bull was put down after the incident.
Baudilio Cornelio, Chairperson of the Hummingbird Community, said, “He was a great man, a hard-working man… That man was dedicated to his farm. I felt losing him because he was a great man in the community.”
