In the wake of a deadly daylight shooting in Belmopan, City Councillor Sanie Cal is urging the business community to help fund a reward for information that leads to the arrest of those responsible.

The appeal comes after 55-year-old delivery truck driver Mark Gabourel was shot and killed in the capital, an attack police say was carried out by two men on a motorcycle who fled the scene.

Online users have been drawing connections between the suspects and an armed robbery that occurred in Armenia Village earlier that week, pointing to what they say are matching helmets, clothing, and shoes seen in both incidents. Police have not yet confirmed the link.

For many in the capital, the killing has shattered a long-held sense of safety.

“In broad daylight, in a calm city,” Cal said. “It struck me because it could have happened to my family… somebody so innocent get his life taken away for no reason.”

As police review surveillance footage and pursue leads, community leaders are calling on residents and businesses to play a more active role in helping bring the suspects to justice.

Attorney and Belmopan resident Arthur Saldivar urged citizens to step forward. “The common man and woman on the street has to take it upon themselves to do what is necessary to be safe,” he said. “Someone knows those persons on that bike.”

Cal has also taken to social media to rally the business community, appealing for support to fund a reward. “Two heads better than one,” he said. “Someone needs to talk… I know somebody knows something.” He added that several business owners have already pledged support.

Police have not yet announced any arrests in connection with Gabourel’s killing or the Armenia Village robbery.
