Market Vendor Packs Up & Relocates

Belize City vendor Herman Freisen says restrictions by the Belize City Council have forced him out of a long-standing market spot. He claims it has disrupted income for more than a dozen farmers in Little Belize whom he sources produce from.

Freisen, who has sold produce at the Michael Finnegan Market for over a decade, claims the Belize City Council abruptly barred him from retail sales, limiting him to wholesale only.

“On Saturdays we used to come and sell retail to the people. But now they cut it and said we cannot sell any more retail,” Freisen said.

The move pushed him to relocate to the Pound Yard Market.

“I was asking if we at least have one more chance to let our customers know and they did not give us a chance… Last Saturday we moved already,” he added.

Freisen maintains that his pricing matched other vendors, despite complaints.

News 5 has reached out to Belize City Mayor Bernard Wagner for comment. A response is expected after today’s caucus meeting. Tune in to News 5 Live tonight at 6 o’clock for updates.
