Mayor Carlos Galvez Loses PUP Candidacy to Maclovio Ack

There was a political shakeup in Punta Gorda Town over the weekend, where voters inside the People’s United Party chose fresh leadership over incumbency. Twenty-eight-year-old Maclovio Ack, a resident of PG, defeated two-time Mayor Carlos ‘Obeah’ Galvez in Sunday’s mayoral convention, securing the majority of support from a turnout of one thousand, two hundred and thirty-three registered voters. Ack also beat out Francis Arzu, another hopeful in the race, to become the PUP’s new mayoral candidate for Punta Gorda. The convention now sets the stage for a new political chapter in the southern municipality. Here’s more from the event, with footage courtesy of our colleagues at PGTV.

Henry Charles-Usher, Chairman, People’s United Party

“In the mayoral race Mr. Maclovio Ack received five hundred and fifty-four votes. Mr. Carlos Glaves received three hundred and ninety-two votes. And Mr. Francis Arzu received two hundred and nine votes. So, the winner today and who will represent the PUP in the March 2027 municipal elections is Mr. Maclovio Ack.”

“This is something I have always wanted to do at a very young age. This has been my aspiration, and I am here living this dream. Most importantly, I am doing it for my town, Punta Gorda, our town, needs a lot of attention and I believe in myself. I believe I have the potential to be a part of the development in Punta Gorda. Leadership began for me at a very young age. I have been participating in community projects.  I have been the president of Rotaract Club of Punta Gorda. That is where I built my leadership qualities.”

After Unseating Galvez, Ack Prepares for UDP Showdown

Maclovio Ack may have cleared the first major hurdle in his bid for Punta Gorda Town Hall, but the real campaign begins now. After defeating two-time Mayor Carlos “Obeah” Galvez in Sunday’s PUP convention, Ack has roughly seven months to make his case to the wider electorate before municipal elections. Today, we asked the newly elected PUP mayoral candidate about his convention victory, his assessment of Punta Gorda’s development under Mayor Galvez, and how he plans to build momentum as he prepares to face his UDP opponent at the polls.

“The beauty about it is that I am very well known in Punta Gorda. The people know who I am. They have seen my commitment in things I do. Part of my campaign was through action, more action than words. So the people see my potential, my capabilities. So that is what I wanted them to do, to believe in me. That is why the came out convention day to give me their support. I respect Mayor “Obeah” Galvez. He is a very great candidate. In the PUP you have the right to go up against anyone in a convention. That is why put up myself. I wanted to give it a shot. I respect both candidates. I have nothing against them. I ensured I put in the work. I met with the people and listened to them and I shared my plans for Punta Gorda. I am ready to work. I am going to continue what I have started. I have been working and I will prove myself that I am ready and serious about leading Punta Gorda. I will start my campaign and it will be through action.”

Ack is a teacher by profession. He intends to leave the classroom to pursue his political endeavors.
