Messi’s ‘Lucky’ Referee to Take Charge of England vs Argentina Semi-Final

FIFA’s appointment of American referee Ismail Elfath for the World Cup semi-final between England and Argentina has sparked debate among fans because of his previous involvement in matches featuring Lionel Messi.

Elfath was confirmed on Tuesday as the referee for Wednesday’s highly anticipated clash, where England will battle the defending champions for a place in the World Cup final.

The appointment has fuelled online speculation from some fans who have questioned whether Argentina has received favourable treatment throughout the tournament. FIFA has denied any claims of bias or interference.

Elfath’s connection to Messi has drawn attention because of the Argentine captain’s perfect record in matches officiated by the referee.

Since Messi joined Inter Miami in 2023, Elfath has officiated four matches involving the forward, with Messi winning all four. Those games include the 2023 Leagues Cup final, where Messi scored as Inter Miami defeated Nashville SC on penalties.

Elfath also served as the fourth official during the 2022 World Cup final in Qatar, when Argentina defeated France to claim the title.

The Morocco-born referee, who represents the United States, has officiated three matches at the 2026 World Cup, including Japan’s draw with the Netherlands, Spain’s victory over Uruguay, and Norway’s win against Brazil.

Known as a strict official, Elfath has shown multiple yellow cards and issued red cards during the tournament. His previous matches have also generated controversy, including Spain’s victory over Uruguay, where Spanish media criticised his handling of the game.

For the semi-final, Elfath will be assisted by fellow Americans Corey Parker and Kyle Atkins, with Italy’s Maurizio Mariani serving as the fourth official.

England are seeking their first World Cup final appearance since 1966, while Argentina are aiming to reach back-to-back finals as they defend their world title.
