Mexican Inmate Dies Following Apparent Hanging at Central Prison

A prisoner’s death at the Belize Central Prison is now under investigation after he was found unresponsive inside his cell. Police say fifty-year-old Mexican national George Rodriquez had been behind bars since December 2025 for an immigration offence. On August twenty-second, his cellmates reportedly found him hanging from the cell gate. Authorities rushed him to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, where he remained for several days before passing away. Investigators are now examining the circumstances surrounding his death, while a postmortem examination will determine the official cause.

ASP Stacy Smith, Staff Officer

“What the investigators have established is that around eleven twenty-five p.m. on the twenty-second of August the guards at the Belize Central Prison were alerted by inmates who shared cell with Mr. Rodriquez that Mr. Rodriquez was unconscious and suspended from the cell gate. Mr. Rodriquez was taken down and the EMT at the Belize Central Prison performed CPR where they were able to successfully restore his breathing. However, he still remained in a largely unconscious state. A postmortem examination is scheduled to be conducted on Mr. Rodriquez tomorrow.”
