Mexican Lawmakers Brawl During Congress Debate
Mexican lawmakers were involved in a physical confrontation on the floor of Congress in Mexico City on Monday, with video showing women legislators shoving and pulling each other’s hair during a live session.
The clash broke out during debate over reforms to Mexico City’s transparency oversight agency, which monitors access to public information and holds government institutions accountable. Opposition lawmakers say the proposed changes weaken independent oversight, while the governing party argues the reforms are necessary to streamline operations.
Members of the opposition moved to occupy the chamber’s main podium in protest, accusing the governing Morena party of violating legislative rules. Ruling party lawmakers attempted to remove them, which triggered the clash.
Opposition lawmaker Daniela Alvarez criticised the incident, saying, “Not only is it vulgar, not only is it aggressive, but it is lamentable that this is the majority governing party for this city.”
A spokesman for the ruling party, Paulo Garcia, disputed the accusations and blamed the opposition for escalating tensions. “What worries us a lot is how the opposition is systematically resorting to violence instead of arguments,” he told a local news outlet.
After the confrontation, the opposition lawmakers left the chamber, and the debate continued without them present.
