Belizean farmers could soon see healthier cattle and better-quality meat as a new livestock training programme gets underway this week in Cayo.

The Ministry of Agriculture has teamed up with Mexico’s international development agency, AMEXCID, to host a five-day training focused on improving livestock production through modern breeding and feeding techniques.

The training, being held at the Central Farm Extension Office this week, brings together agriculture extension officers, University of Belize technicians, and members of the Belize Livestock Producers Association.

The sessions cover pasture management, how to condition animals nutritionally for higher productivity, and ways to cut waste in local beef and dairy production through capacity building.

The initiative comes just weeks after Prime Minister John Briceño urged sugar cane farmers to diversify into cattle, pointing to livestock as a way to strengthen Belize’s agriculture sector and create new income opportunities.

“We’ve been talking with cane farmers for decades about diversifying, that don’t put all your eggs in one industry, in sugar,” Briceño told reporters.
