Mexico Hits China With Tariffs Up to 50%

Mexico has approved a sweeping set of tariffs that will raise import duties on more than 1,400 products from China and dozens of countries without a free trade agreement with Mexico. The measures were backed by the Senate and are set to take effect on January 1, 2026.

According to the government, this decision will strengthen local industries. Senator Claudia Selene Ávila said the tariffs “seek to protect goods that Mexican industry has the capacity to produce.” She added that the decision complies with World Trade Organization rules.

Goods affected include metals, vehicles, clothing, and appliances. Cars from China and several Asian countries will face tariff of up to 50%. Chinese automakers such as BYD and MG have expanded rapidly in Mexico.

The Mexican Auto Industry Association welcomed the higher duties. Its president, Rogelio Garza, said the decision is “very good news for all those who invest in Mexico and create jobs”.

The move comes as Mexico negotiates with the United States after President Donald Trump threatened steep tariffs on Mexican exports. He has accused Mexico of acting as a “transshipment hub” for Chinese goods and has warned of new duties on Mexican steel, aluminum, and farm-related products.

Critics in Mexico say the higher tariffs risk raising costs for consumers and small businesses.
