Barbadians head to the polls today, with incumbent Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley vying to secure a third consecutive term. The country’s first female leader since independence in 1966, has earned global recognition for her climate advocacy and support for small nations.

Local news outlets have reported on a recent nationwide poll, which shows nearly 80% of decided voters backing Mottley’s Barbados Labour Party (BLP). The survey found 61.2% support for Mottley compared with 18% for Democratic Labour Party (DLP) leader Ralph Thorne. Only 10% said they might vote outside the two main parties.

Barbados’ economy remained resilient through 2024 and into 2025. According to the World Bank, real GDP grew 4.0% in 2024, fuelled by “robust activity in tourism, construction, and business services.”

A three-member CARICOM Election Observation Mission (CEOM) is in Barbados to monitor today’s general election. The mission’s objective is to ensure transparency, fairness, and adherence to democratic standards. The CEOM will present its findings at a closing media briefing on Thursday.
