“Mike” Heusner: ‘One of Belize’s Strongest Voice for Conservation and Tourism’
One of the most recognisable voices in Belize’s environmental and tourism sectors, Michael “Mike” Heusner, passed away on Saturday, January 10, at the age of 86.
Heusner played a central role in national conversations on conservation, sport fishing and sustainable tourism for decades. He consistently argued that Belize’s economy could not survive without protecting its natural environment and spent his life defending that balance.
Following news of his passing, tributes poured in from across the environmental and tourism communities. Oceana Belize described Heusner as “a devoted advocate for the protection of Belize’s marine treasures”, pointing out Heusner’s firm opposition to gillnets and other destructive fishing practices.
The Coastal Zone Management Authority and Institute said Heusner had a rare ability to explain complex environmental issues through stories and lived experience.
Meanwhile, the Belize Tourism Board called him a pioneer of ecotourism and responsible sport fishing. The BTB credited his work with helping position Belize as a global destination for anglers and nature lovers.
Sport Fishing Belize wrote online, “Mike’s passion and advocacy for the proper and sustainable use of our environment, as well as his work in building and supporting Belize’s sport fishing industry, are remarkable.”
A Celebration of Life is planned for June. Further details are to be announced.
