Minister Ferguson Back In PM’s Good Graces?
Less than a week after a major cabinet adjustment, Prime Minister John Briceño has issued yet another ‘adjustment’.
Jose Abelardo Mai has been removed from the cabinet list following controversy linking him to certain activities. His portfolio of Agriculture, Food Security, and New Growth Industries has been handed to Rodwell Ferguson.
Ferguson’s appointment has raised questions, given his previous tenure as Minister of Transport (2020–2025), during which he changed CEOs three times.
Prime Minister John Briceño, however, is confident in his decision.
Speaking on Ferguson’s background, Briceño noted that he has served as a deputy leader of the party and has represented his division since 2003, with strong electoral support in recent years. Although he was not re-elected in 2008, Briceño emphasised that Ferguson has since returned with “huge margins” at the polls, reflecting his popularity and commitment to his constituents.
“[He] loves his people and works with them. Bringing him back into Cabinet means leaning on his experience as a representative and minister,” Briceño said.
The Prime Minister added that Ferguson’s rural background gives him a unique perspective on the challenges faced by farmers and communities dependent on agriculture.
“He lives in a rural area so he can better appreciate the challenges of our people in agriculture,” Briceño explained.
Briceño added that Ferguson will be supported by a strong team of advisors, including the ministry’s CEO and technical officers, ensuring that Belize’s agricultural growth is “in good hands”.
