Ministry of Health Responds to Death of Two-Year-Old Kaleel Nah
The Ministry of Health and Wellness (MoHW) has issued a statement following the death of two-year-old Kaleel Nah, who passed away on Wednesday.
According to the release, Kaleel was first taken to the San Pedro Polyclinic on September 1st with symptoms of vomiting and fever. According to the ministry, the following day, he was admitted for treatment of an acute respiratory infection and dehydration. The ministry says that after showing signs of improvement, his parents were advised to seek specialist care for further management.
The ministry said it is reviewing the circumstances surrounding the care provided at the San Pedro Polyclinic and the chain of events that led to the child’s death.
“This is a coroner’s case; therefore, we await the result of the autopsy findings.”
His mother, Virgen Garcia, said he began feeling sick on Saturday with fever and vomiting. After home treatment failed, she took him to the island’s polyclinic, where he was treated for dehydration and later admitted for IV fluids.
Garcia said despite blood tests and x-rays showing no abnormalities, her son’s condition worsened by Tuesday. Doctors eventually referred him to the KHMH in Belize City, but not on an emergency basis. With no immediate flight available, Garcia borrowed money and took a water taxi. Kaleel collapsed during the trip and died before reaching Caye Caulker.
Through tears, Garcia told News 5 she believes the health system failed her, claiming doctors never diagnosed her son and delayed urgent transfer to the city.
