More Details of Police Officer Injured in Shooting
A police officer was shot Wednesday night in Belize City while responding to a gang-related attack near Police Street.
The officer, Corporal Elvis Guzman, sustained a gunshot wound to his arm. A police patrol vehicle was also reportedly targeted, with residents describing the shots as coming from a high-powered automatic weapon.
The incident unfolded around 8:25 p.m. when 26-year-old Ryan Young Jr., a construction worker from Belize City, was shot by occupants of a black Chevy Equinox. Corporal Guzman and DC Christian Reyes, who were on patrol nearby, heard the gunfire and pursued the vehicle. During the chase, two men in the Equinox fired at the police vehicle, striking Corporal Guzman.
Both victims were transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital for treatment. Police have launched an ongoing investigation into the shooting.
