More Robberies Over the Weekend, Two Men Detained
Two Cayo District men are in police custody following the robbery of two female tourists in San Ignacio late Friday night.
Surveillance footage of the attack shows the victims walking on Burns Avenue just after 11:00 PM when a man dressed in a black hoodie targeted one of the women. The victims have been identified as 27-year-old United States nationals Halee Hackett and Emerald Estadrook, both from California.
The stolen bag contained a mobile phone valued at about $1,200, along with cash, bank cards, and passports. Police have only been able to trace the phone’s signal and later recovered it from a drain on West Street.
Other robberies over the weekend include the fatal attempted robbery at a supermarket in Santa Elena, where Zeldon Thompson was a suspect and was shot by the store owner, and a reported armed robbery attempt involving two men on a motorcycle trying to rob a delivery worker in Belize City.
There have been about ten robberies so far since the start of December. The public is being urged to take preventative measures to protect themselves and report any suspicious activities.
