Mother Demands Justice After Losing Second Son to Hit-and-Run
An early morning hit-and-run has claimed the life of 31-year-old security guard Mark “Bul” Magaña. His family is now demanding justice.
Reports are that Magaña was walking along Bullet Tree Road in the early hours of Thursday when he was struck by an SUV. The driver did not stop. Magaña later died from his injuries.
His mother, Marta Magaña Nibul, said she received a call from police around 2:45 a.m. “The police asked me if I know who is Mark Bul,” she said. “I told him, yes, that’s my son.”
She said another officer took the phone but gave few details. “I asked him, can you please tell me if it is serious,” she said. “He told me, ‘Mami, it is very serious.’”
Magaña was first taken to the San Ignacio Hospital before being transferred to Belize City. His body remains at the morgue.
According to his mother, Magaña had accepted an extra hour of work that night. “They called him to do an extra little hour of job. So he didn’t refuse,” she said. “Anywhere he can get a job, he would never refuse.”
Magaña leaves behind three children, two boys and a girl. “One of the boys is 10 years, and the little girl is six to seven years old, and then there’s a baby of almost two years,” Nibul added.
Nibul believes the outcome could have been different if the driver had stopped and is now is pleading for accountability. “I really need justice; that’s all my plea. Because sixteen years ago I lost my other son in an accident… and now another one, the same way,” she said.
“We need to get serious with these reckless drivers,” she added.
