Mother of Student Knocked Down, Killed Speaks to News 5

Police are investigating the death of 16-year-old Tyrel Cardines, a student at Gwen Lizarraga High School, who was struck and killed by a Floralia bus this morning in Hattieville.

Reports indicate that Tyrel was riding his bicycle when the fatal collision occurred and died on the scene.

Tyrel’s mother, Marilee Cardines, told News Five she was at work when she received the news. She told News 5, “Traffic needs to get down on those buses and those bus drivers, because they don’t have a care.”

She added that her son is not the only person that has lost their life at the same location “because of careless drivers”.

Family members confirmed the tragedy on social media shortly after the incident. One relative wrote, “Rest easy, my Lee cousin… You had the most amazing manner. Nobody knows the pain your mom is going through.” Another added, “The damage on the bus proves that you are speeding… I know you’re in Heaven with your grandpa. Rest easy, cos.”

Therese Jacob, a family friend from church, described Tyrel as “a very humble, nice, loving, cheerful young man” with a contagious laugh. “He had a laugh that would make you laugh just by hearing him,” she told News 5.

Jacob said Tyrel had just left her house to go to the store when he was struck. “I didn’t expect it. I didn’t want to see him that way,” she said.

Authorities have not yet released an official statement.
