Motorcycle Driving School Coming Soon
It was another deadly weekend on Belize’s roads, with four people losing their lives and several others injured in separate traffic accidents.
The growing number of fatalities added pressure on the Ministry of Transport and other authorities for tougher laws and better enforcement, especially when it comes to motorcycle riders.
With RTA deaths like these becoming all too common, the ministry is considering taking action by launching a driving school.
It’s goal will focus on teaching riders, especially young motorcyclists, how to safely operate their bikes and understand the country’s road safety laws.
“What is even more concerning is that every day we’re reading of these accidents on the news; we’re seeing it playing out. The news media has been extremely graphic in putting out the effect of these accidents. And despite that, we’re still seeing that our young people are not taking heed. They continue in the reckless manner in which they maneuver motorcycles on our highways,” said the Chief Executive Officer of the Ministry of Transport, Chester Williams.
Williams said the ministry’s plan involves a multi-faceted approach, including legislative reform, stricter enforcement, and stronger sensitisation campaigns “particularly among our younger population. Because there need to be an attitude change among that group of persons.”
He explained that certified institutions will conduct the training and issue certificates to those applying for motorcycle licences.
The ministry expects the new system to take effect next year.
