NEBL Condemns Player Altercation, Vows Disciplinary Action
The National Elite Basketball League (NEBL) has condemned a bench‑clearing brawl that erupted during Friday night’s game between the Belize City Defenders and the Orange Walk Rebels at the Orange Walk Sporting Complex.
The clash began when a Rebels player dunked over a Defenders opponent and then stood over him, taunting. The Defenders’ players took offence and rushed onto the court to confront him. Within moments the benches had cleared and a full brawl broke out in front of fans.
NEBL Commissioner Leroy Banner described the incident as “a serious breach of discipline, respect, and professionalism”, adding that such behaviour is “unacceptable and will not be condoned”.
“All individuals found responsible will be held fully accountable. Appropriate disciplinary measures will be enforced in accordance with our bylaws,” Banner said, adding that the league apologised to fans, sponsors, and supporters for falling short of the safe, family-friendly environment the NEBL aims to provide.
Both team owners distanced themselves from the conduct of their players while acknowledging the situation head-on.
Rebels owner Troy Gabb Jr. called it a spur-of-the-moment situation but said penalties are inevitable for players who left the bench.
“It happened. It was a spur-of-the-moment type of situation… Unfortunately it happened Friday night at one of our own games,” Gabb said. “I always try to ensure that my players instill discipline. If you notice, one of my guys never did lift their hands and throw punches, because at the end of the day that’s something that’s very serious.”
Belize City Defenders Marketing Director John Marsden also expressed disappointment. “The entire ordeal was uncalled for, both from the start to the reaction to some of the actions of my players,” he said.
Suspensions and fines are expected to be handed down in the coming days as the NEBL reviews the footage and applies its disciplinary bylaws.
