NEBL Issues Suspensions, Fines After Chaotic Orange Walk Game
Just days after tempers flared and play came to a halt in Orange Walk, the National Elite Basketball League is sending a clear message. League officials have handed down suspensions and fines following last week’s chaotic showdown between the Belize City Defenders and the Orange Walk Running Rebels. The NEBL is calling the April seventeenth incident a serious breach of professionalism, and tonight, we’re learning exactly who’s being disciplined and why. Here’s News Five’s Isani Cayetano with that report.

What was supposed to be an exciting night of basketball at the Orange Walk Sporting Complex instead unraveled into an on‑court confrontation that left fans, sponsors and officials disappointed. In an immediate response, the league launched a review and promised accountability. That promise is now taking shape.
Several players from both teams have been handed suspensions ranging from one game to the remainder of the 2026 season, along with fines totaling more than five thousand dollars. The penalties target actions including striking, kicking and pushing opponents, as well as leaving the bench area during the altercation, an automatic violation of league rules. Additional fines were imposed on players who refused to leave the court or remained inside the arena after being disqualified. NEBL officials say the sanctions reflect the league’s commitment to its “Basketball at its Best” mantra and to restoring confidence among fans who expect safe, family‑friendly entertainment. All fines collected will be donated to a charitable organization, to be selected by the league office.
Commissioner Leroy Banner previously acknowledged the incident fell short of league standards and apologized to supporters, stressing that the behavior on display does not represent the values of the NEBL. The league insists these measures are about more than punishment, they’re about sending a clear message as the regular season heads toward its climax. With playoffs around the corner, the NEBL hopes the decisive action will shift the spotlight back where it belongs: on competitive basketball, mutual respect, and a strong finish to the season.
