Network of NGOs Demands Rosado Step Down
For the Belize Network of NGOs, the controversy surrounding Alexis Rosado is bigger than any one man or any single allegation. It is about protecting public trust. The organization is calling on Rosado to step down as Belize’s Co-Agent before the International Court of Justice, arguing that serious criminal allegations involving public officials demand accountability and the highest standards of conduct, regardless of whether guilt has been determined.
On the Phone: Elma Kay, Chair, Belize Network of NGOS
“There has been a lot in the news and I think the statement and post Madam Speaker has really prompted a wider conversation on this and I think it is a conversation that many align with. We do have a membership and we spoke to our membership and we are aligned with her position on this issue. It really should apply for anyone serving in an official capacity serving our country.”
On the Phone: Janelle Chanona, NGO Senator
“I give kudos to the media for putting the question before our public officials and certainly in my own capacity I have been commenting on a few of those stories that the message I interpreted or took away from those comments on this issue was clear to women and girls, that if the matter is important enough of if the person is important enough that somehow justice being delayed in determining what was exactly happening or had happened was fine and I personally ascribe to justice delayed is justice denied for both the accused and the complainant. So it has to be that we are taking a zero tolerance position.”
BNN says public trust must be earned and protected.
