New Tourism Project Near Sarteneja Gets Green Light
A new tourism and housing project near Sarteneja Village in Corozal has been approved by the Department of the Environment. However, developers must follow strict rules to protect the land, water, and local way of life.
The project, led by Sarteneja South Winds Limited, will be built in phases. Only Phase 1 is approved for now. Future phases will need more approval based on how well the developers follow the rules.
Sarteneja South Winds is a limited liability company legally registered in Belize, and officially established in 2012 under the Companies Act. It remains in good standing and is backed by international investors, as detailed in its share capital summary from January 2020.
The development is aimed at foreigners looking to retire or invest in Belize, but locals will also be welcome to enjoy its benefits.
Before any construction begins, the company must detail which trees and vegetation will be cleared and ensure its water supply comes from a deep aquifer, separate from the one used by the community, to avoid shortages.
To reduce pressure on the national power grid, the developers are required to build a solar farm in Phase 2. Some areas, like the third canal near Cayo Falso, must remain untouched. That canal will become a private nature reserve, and two traditional fishing spots will be protected for community use.
To prevent pollution, septic tanks will not be allowed for homes. Archaeologists will monitor construction to protect any historical sites, and a performance bond will be required to ensure the developers stick to the plan.
