A 35-year-old Belize Coast Guard member has died after gunmen opened fire on a vehicle carrying several passengers near Carolina Village, Corozal District, on Sunday evening. Lionel Logan, of Libertad Village, was shot multiple times, while another man was injured and a nine-year-old girl sustained a minor injury during the attack.

The shooting happened around 6:45 p.m. on October 18, according to ASP Stacy Smith. “Both Logan and Dyer were travelling on board an SUV after leaving a football game, and they were happened upon by several male persons who drove up alongside them on board a van and fired into that vehicle,” Smith said.

Logan later succumbed to his injuries, while Dyer was listed in stable condition, Smith said. “No motive has been established so far, but as I had indicated, they are persons who have commanded the police’s radar before.”

Earlier reports identified Dyer, a construction worker from Corozal Town, and Logan as the two men shot during the incident. Dyer sustained pellet injuries to his right forearm and lower abdomen, while Logan suffered multiple gunshot wounds to his left forearm, lower abdomen and the back of his head.

A nine-year-old girl who was travelling in the vehicle with her mother also sustained a minor cut to her right palm, reportedly caused by broken glass. The mother and daughter managed to escape from the vehicle.

The black Chevrolet Equinox was later found abandoned in the San Antonio Village area, bearing apparent bullet holes and shattered glass.

Police have not identified the suspected gunmen, and the investigation remains ongoing.
