NTUCB Condemns “Apparent Police Complicity” in Budna’s Abduction
The National Trade Union Congress of Belize (NTUCB) has strongly condemned what it describes as “apparent police complicity” in the abduction of Joseph Budna. The union said it is “deeply disturbed by the complete abandonment of due process and the rule of law” after video evidence surfaced showing masked men forcing Budna away.
In a statement, the NTUCB said, “Video evidence shows a disturbing scene where a Belize police officer, rather than intervening to protect a citizen being forcibly taken against their will, appears to have engaged with the alleged kidnappers and subsequently turned away without rendering assistance.”
The group added that the footage “suggests” law enforcement may have “actively facilitated this illegal act.”
The NTUCB called for a Senate inquiry, full accountability for any officers involved, and transparency from the Government.
“We cannot and will not accept a system where our own police force participates in the illegal removal of Belizean citizens from our territory,” the union stated.
Their demand adds to UDP Leader Moses “Shyne” Barrow also pressing for the immediate release of surveillance footage.
Home Affairs Minister Kareem Musa has admitted that the incident “leaves a lot to be answered” and admitted that “it warrants an independent investigation” despite the outcome of his police department’s investigation.
Meanwhile, on Tuesday, Prime Minister John Briceño denied government involvement, saying, “This was not sanctioned by the Government of Belize.”
