NTUCB Slams ‘Silence’ on Speednet Deal

Tensions are mounting ahead of a planned protest this Wednesday in Belize City, as both the National Trade Union Congress of Belize and the United Democratic Party prepare to demonstrate in front of the Social Security Board’s headquarters. In a sharply worded release, the NTUCB is taking aim at the proposed acquisition of Speednet, warning that the deal lacks transparency and accountability. The union accuses the Social Security Board of what it calls a “deafening silence” as a transaction of major national and economic importance moves forward. The union notes that SSB already owns more than thirty-four percent shares in BTL, giving it a clear legal obligation to protect workers’ contributions. Yet, according to the NTUCB, there has been no meaningful disclosure or consultation with contributors whose money is at stake. While the union has not officially demanded the resignation of SSB Board Chairman Chandra Nisbet-Cansino, News Five understands that hardliners within the labor movement have repeatedly called for her to step aside. Their criticism centers on her decision to resign from BTL’s Board of Directors ahead of a critical meeting on the acquisition, a move some describe as an abdication of duty at a pivotal moment. The NTUCB is now demanding that SSB publicly oppose the acquisition until full due diligence is completed and contributors’ concerns are addressed. The protest is expected to draw additional support, with the Belize Communications Workers for Justice also planning to participate. News Five further understands that the four social partner senators may use Wednesday to take a forceful public stance on the issue.
