Official Police Report on Young Men Killed in Motorcycle Crash
The Belize Police Department has released official information regarding the tragic road traffic accident that claimed two young lives on Saturday in Corozal.
Jael Guzman and Ranick Chavaria were on a motorcycle when he collided head-on with a bus.
Police responded to the scene and found extensive damage to both vehicles.
Initial investigations suggest the Guzmans were travelling from Orange Walk toward Corozal Town when they drifted into the opposite lane and collided with the oncoming bus. The bus driver told police he attempted to swerve to avoid the collision, but the impact was unavoidable.
Authorities confirmed that one of the men was wearing a helmet, while the other was not. Speeding is suspected to have played a role in the accident, though toxicology tests are pending to determine whether alcohol was involved. Post-mortem examinations and blood tests will be conducted as part of the ongoing investigation.
The bus driver has been served with a Notice of Intended Prosecution (NIP), and the case has been forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for further review.
