Ombudsman’s Report Flags Delays, Abuse of Authority, and Mental Health Gaps

The Office of the Ombudsman has tabled its 2024 Annual Report in the National Assembly, shining a light on persistent issues in public service delivery. The report reveals that hundreds of complaints were filed last year, with the most common grievances involving delays in service, abuse of authority, neglect of duty, and failure to follow proper procedures. Several government departments were repeatedly flagged for maladministration, though the report does not name them publicly in this summary. Beyond individual complaints, the Ombudsman highlighted systemic concerns, including mental health care gaps within the Belize Coast Guard and weak oversight during states of emergency. The Ombudsman stressed the need for stronger accountability and better service standards across the public sector. To keep the public informed, the office will host a media round from September thirtieth to October third, offering a deeper dive into the findings and recommendations. Copies of the full report are available on the Ombudsman’s official website and at libraries nationwide. The office reaffirmed its commitment to fairness, justice, and transparency in governance.
