The decision not to renew the Ombudsman’s contract has triggered public concern, and the Opposition is now questioning why no explanation has been given and what it means for government accountability.

The contract of Ombudsman Major Herman Gilbert Swazo will expire today, December 31st. “We are grateful for your contributions. Wishing you all the best in your future endeavors,” the letter said.

In an online statement, the leader of the United Democratic Party and Opposition Leader, Tracy Panton, described the Office of the Ombudsman as a constitutionally significant institution tasked with protecting citizens from maladministration, abuse of power, and injustice by the State.

“Its independence, continuity, and credibility are fundamental to democratic governance and the rule of law,” Panton said. “To date, no clear explanation has been provided to the Belizean people regarding the decision not to renew the Ombudsman’s contract.”

The development follows controversy over Swazo’s handling of a Freedom of Information appeal involving legal fees paid to private attorneys in the government’s redistricting case. Swazo had ruled that part of the information should be disclosed. The government is now challenging that decision in court.

Swazo said on Tuesday he was surprised by a letter he received on Christmas Eve from Cabinet Secretary Stuart Leslie. “The letter did not in any way address reengagement,” he said. “To my mind, that implies then that I am not gonna be reengaged.”

He rejected suggestions that his actions should deter others from standing up for justice.
