Strong criticism has emerged from the Opposition following Cabinet’s decision to launch an independent investigation into the alleged kidnapping of Joseph Budna while reinstating Commissioner of Police Dr Richard Rosado to active duty.

UDP Leader Moses “Shyne” Barrow said the investigation was “compromised”, pointing to concerns that the inquiry report was submitted to the Prime Minister rather than the Director of Public Prosecutions. He further questioned allegations that video evidence was erased and condemned the Cabinet’s order restricting police officers from speaking publicly about the case.

“Any investigation not independent of the Cabinet and police department is a farce,” Barrow stated.

He urged the government to form a panel of independent legal experts, including current and former DPPs from Belize and the wider CARICOM region.

Leader of the Opposition Tracy Taegar Panton went further, describing the Cabinet’s response as a “sham” and “a direct insult to the Belizean people.” She said the government only called for an independent investigation after weeks of public pressure and accused officials of attempting a cover-up.

“The Cabinet’s attempt to silence police officers and hide the full contents of the Inquiry Report reeks,” Panton declared. She also denounced Rosado’s reinstatement, calling it “reckless” and “a mockery of justice.”

Panton pledged that the UDP would continue pressing for full accountability. “Belizeans are no fools. We see clearly that this government is more interested in protecting its insiders than protecting the integrity of our nation,” she said.
