The crowd waiting at the Haulover Bridge near the Grand Resort erupted in cheers when teams in this year’s La Ruta Maya Belize River Challenge paddled their canoes to the traditional finish line at the Belcan Bridge.

Paddlers began regrouping at the entrance of a channel that leads directly to the Belcan Bridge in Belize City. From there, the paddlers moved together toward the traditional finish line, not competing any more, but as a single protest.

The teams were protesting the organisers’ decision to move the finish line. Many paddlers opposed the change, saying the change reflected the “commercialisation” of the decades-old traditional race.

Support also poured in online. One fan wrote, “I love this! The guys are tired but Belcan it is!” Another supporter said, “Never been prouder my whole damn life. Bring it home guys!”

A viewer watching News 5 Belize’s live coverage commented, “Finally Belizeans stand together for something…really proud of you all.”

The teams in protest are expected to arrive at Belcan Bridge within the next 30-40 minutes.

Despite the controversy, PACT on TRAK won the 2026 Belikin La Ruta Maya Belize River Challenge, sweeping all four legs. The team featured paddlers Amado Cruz, Enrique Cruz and Cristian Lopez.

News 5 will be going live at Belcan Bridge for the arrival of the teams in protest.
