OWTC Pursues Legal Action After Street Sign Vandalism
The Orange Walk Town Council (OWTC) says it is moving to take legal action against a group of young people accused of vandalising public property.
According to the council, disturbing images surfaced on social media showing the group breaking a street sign during a night out and later posing with it. The incident reportedly occurred last week.
The OWTC noted that this is not an isolated case, as it has “repeatedly received images of damaged and vandalised signage or other public infrastructure.” The council stressed that such assets are installed for the benefit and safety of residents, and damaging them puts the public at risk.
“We have publicly requested the public’s assistance in safeguarding such assets as they are put in place for the public’s benefit and safety, as is the case with street signs,” the council stated, warning that those identified in acts of vandalism will face legal consequences.
In this case, the OWTC confirmed that it is actively pursuing legal action against the individuals involved.
It also added that, “In another recent case, the electrical wires connected to one of the newly installed lights at the Central Park was ripped off and stolen, less than two days after installation. We ask the public to take care of public infrastructures and road signage as we work towards continued service excellence, ensuring the beautification and safety of our Town.”
