The United Democratic Party is calling the Ministry of Transport’s proposed cycling course “a hustle”. The party says it cannot support any initiative that will financially burden the working class with new taxes and fees. Party Leader Panton contends that the best alternative is to focus on enforcement. Here is how she puts it.

“It is a hustle, if I can be blunt. We were suppose to have this press conference last week Thursday and we were not able to because we had a number of committee meeting to attend for various pieces of legislation that is to come to the House at Friday’s meeting. Occupational safety, health safety, NHI Bill, BELCOGEN Bill, Motorcycle Bill, Domestic Violence Bill. Thise matters have not been able to be placed on the agenda, why, the Tobacco Bill, because members of the government themselves, the back benchers who don’t sit in Cabinet and who are not privy to the decision being made in Cabinet are saying we don’t agree with that. The backbenchers in the south and north say we don’t know about this and this will materially impact our citizens and it provides no guarantee that the highways will be safer. We need to look at these issues more critically. We cannot support any opportunity where the working class continue to bear the biggest burden in terms of cost of living and new taxes and new fees.”
