Parents, Councilors Join Peewee Basketball Camp Finale
Nearly one hundred young boys and girls are ready to show what they have learned after two weeks of drills, teamwork and basketball basics. The Belize City Council’s annual Peewee Basketball Camp wraps up this week, but not before the campers take center court at the SCA Auditorium on Wednesday evening for exhibition games. They will leave with certificates and school bags, but they will also get one final chance to put their new skills on display. The evening will also feature a friendly matchup between city councilors and parents. Programs Manager Micheal Fritz says the event celebrates the children’s progress while raising funds for the council’s back-to-school drive.

“It’s an opportunity for us to not only close off the program for the hundred plus participants but as well raise funds for our back to school drive. So our Peewee finals is scheduled for tomorrow, Wednesday, July twenty-ninth, at the SEA Auditorium from six thirty until about ten o’clock. And it’s an opportunity to showcase the skills that the participants have been, um, learning from the beginning of July. They’ve been under the tutelage of none other than Coach Roscoe Rhys, as well as some of our Belize City Council Dragons players. So it’s an opportunity for them to showcase what they’ve learned and also as well have some fun. And there is an opportunity, it would be a perfect situation where for us to have a councilors versus parents game. So that’s also a part of the game plan for tomorrow evening.”

“Now tell us about after the camp is wrapped up, what will these Peewee participants receive?”

“So as a part of the closing out ceremony, they will be getting their certificates, uh, school bag courtesy of the Belize City Council, and as well an opportunity to continue participating in our, um, programs. So outside of summer, we do have our Youth Connect Student Hub series of programs that offers free homework assistance, tutoring and mentoring.”
The Belize City Council is also hosting summer programs for children interested in yoga and academics.
