Partnership Strengthens Vaca Forest Protection
It’s no surprise farmers are speaking up about what’s happening in the Vaca Forest Reserve. After all, they’ve been working hand in hand with Friends for Conservation and Development to promote sustainable farming. These certified farmers are known as the ‘Friends of Vaca,’ and they’ve taken on the role of stewards, protecting the health and future of the reserve. Now, let’s be real, there are still some who farm illegally in the area. But FCD’s Executive Director, Rafael Manzanero, says years of investment have paid off, empowering many farmers to do things the right way and safeguard this protected space.

“Over the years we have been building a stewardship program in order for the people to look after the reserve. So, over the years it has improved in terms of the people looking after the reserve. So, that would have been raised as a result of the level of interest they have.”

“What update have you received, if any at all from the department?”
On the Phone: Raphael Manzanero
“I would not know any at all, because it just happened recently. So, I am not sure if they have been unable to undertake the patrol on the ground, because this is more of a recent report.”
