Patient Dies Hours After Ceiling Fan Falls on Him in India

A 42-year-old patient died less than three hours after a ceiling fan crashed onto his bed while he was receiving treatment at Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital in Northeast Delhi, India. The family is now demanding an investigation into the facility’s safety standards.

According to local reports, police said the incident occurred around 9.30pm on Saturday in an emergency ward, where the patient, identified as Mohammad Akbar, was being treated for hypertension, meningoencephalitis and aspiration pneumonia.

Eyewitnesses said the fan suddenly detached and fell on Akbar. A nursing officer attending to him was also injured.

The hospital’s death certificate lists his time of death as 12.16am, roughly three hours after the fan fell, and cites his underlying illnesses as the cause.

A hospital official confirmed the fan fell but denied it caused Akbar’s death or any serious injury, adding that Akbar had already been admitted with severe respiratory complications, and his death occurred due to his underlying medical condition.

Akbar’s family argue the incident exposed serious maintenance failures at one of Delhi’s largest public hospitals and are demanding a fair and independent investigation into whether negligence played a role.
