Peak Hurricane Season Approaching, Are You Prepared?
We’re halfway through hurricane season here in the Caribbean, and while Belize has been lucky so far, experts say we shouldn’t let our guard down just yet. The first major storm of the Atlantic season, Category Five Hurricane Erin, recently tore through parts of the U.S. East Coast after hammering the Bahamas and Turks and Caicos with heavy wind and rain. With the peak of the season just around the corner, National Emergency Coordinator Daniel Mendez is urging everyone to start preparing now. Because when it comes to hurricanes, it’s always better to be ready than caught off guard.

“We are now heading to the peak of the hurricane season. So the time to prepare is now. The time to be ready is now. The time to make arrangements, that time is now. You cannot wait. You need to know what your plans are. Where you are going to go, what you are going to do. You need to have these things ready to go. As we move into the season, we are starting to see the Caribbean really become active, we can’t wait. Preparations need to begin now. I would say that people are seeing things are quiet and think we are moving out of danger but really we are moving into the peak of the hurricane season. This is when we traditionally see more things happening and we at NEMO remain vigilant. Not to say we are not vigilant all year. But this is particularly the time when we are most aware and preparing.”
