Perez Secures Land Titles inside Hol Chan Cayes

As the Sargassum Task Force steps up preparations ahead of a possible influx along the coast, Minister Andre Perez is also making waves on another front, this time in marine protection, after securing land titles for eleven small cayes inside the Hol Chan Marine Reserve.

“It is actually eleven little Cayes and islands that all fall within the marine reserve. And, when we entered government, when I was doing the research, I was surprised that all these islands had been parceled out, parceled out means they had been already surveyed and someone can apply to buy it. I said this cannot be. So this is where I got on it immediately to secure it and even if it is parceled out, if I say nobody can get it, if government changes, that same parcel is still available to be sold off. So to secure it the best way is to put it in the Hol Chan Marine titles. That is something that is big. It secures and protects not only Hol Chan, but I am talking about the entire community. You don’t want to give out those private islands. It has been a struggle across the entire Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker. So I put a stop to it. That is huge. No one can ever say I want those lands.”
