PM Briceño Speaks On U.S. Actions in Venezuela
Prime Minister John Briceño has joined regional leaders in voicing concern over the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife by the United States.
Speaking exclusively to News Five, Briceño said Belize has “consistently expressed concern about the military buildup in the Caribbean Sea” and is “equally concerned about the events that have unfolded over the past 48 hours in Venezuela.”
He added that Belize is working with CARICOM and SICA partners on a coordinated response. “Belize is fully committed to the principles of international law and multilateralism and calls on all countries to respect these principles,” he said.
Briceño’s remarks echo those of the United Nations, which said it is “deeply alarmed” and raised concern about whether international law was respected in actions taken by the Trump administration.
On Saturday, the United States launched a major military operation, deploying more than 150 aircraft overnight to capture Maduro. Senior U.S. officials described the operation as months in the making and unprecedented in scale.
Since then, Venezuela’s acting president, formerly Vice President Delcy Rodríguez, condemned the operation but has now called for collaboration with the U.S., emphasising dialogue and cooperation.
Maduro is now expected to appear in a New York City courthouse on drug and weapons charges.
