PM Says Belizean Parliament is Relatively “Well-Behaved”
Things got heated in Mexico’s Congress this week; so heated, it turned physical. On Monday, lawmakers clashed during a debate over reforms to the capital’s transparency oversight agency. Video from the session shows women legislators shoving and even pulling hair after opposition members stormed the podium in protest, accusing the ruling Morena party of breaking the rules. Morena fired back, saying the reforms are necessary to streamline operations, while both sides pointed fingers over who sparked the chaos. Now, here at home, Belizean lawmakers have had their share of fiery exchanges, but never anything like this. Today, Prime Minister John Briceño weighed in on the incident.

“It goes to show you how well behaved we are. When you look at what’s going on, not only in Mexico, but you’ve seen that in Asia. You’ve seen a lot of fights going on all over the place. I think you’ve seen it, I think in Canada, but in Central America, that happens all the time. Listen we again are like the media, sensationalize negative things, but look at where we are. We could argue with one another in the house, but when the thing done. We are hugging one another. Hugging friends. That’s all about you doing your work, but then at the end of the day, we’re so you need to go into any kind of physical fight”
